Our idea for the repurposing of the abbey focuses on preserving the ruins, carefully integrating new functions, and expanding for new uses. The first step is securing the existing ruins. The concept of our design involves placing a new main space within the old nave, but slightly offset to create an open courtyard in the former nave. In the two side aisles, boxes will be installed: one side will house the new large kitchen, while the other will provide space for restrooms. The large new main space will feature a long dining table and several seating areas for relaxation. The room is characterized by its height and a butterfly roof structure. It is designed to offer visitors a modern interpretation of the former nave. On the one hand, the rafters mimic the old roof structure, and the new rafters are extended to allow light to enter the interior. Light enters the main space indirectly from the sides through large windows, creating a relaxing atmosphere. Exiting the main space, visitors pass through a cloister into the newly defined courtyard, a hortus conclusus that recalls monastery typology. From the cloister, a structure emerges that will eventually accommodate traveling guests. The cloister leads directly to the meditation room, where another space is integrated into the ruins, offering a room of contemplation. A water basin between the church and the inserted box provides visitors with a beautiful and pleasant view. The campanile is accessed from the courtyard via a new staircase tower placed adjacent to the existing structure. From the upper floors, one can enjoy a magnificent view over the Rieti province. In the upper floors are single meditation rooms and thats where they should be hand in hand with the view to the nature.
